European Court of Human Rights has finally issued its judgment in Case of Kaya v Turkey [2020] ECHR 468

During pupillage in 2008, Sam Blom-Cooper was instructed by the Kurdish Human Rights Project (KHRP) to represent Kurdish political activist, Ferhat Kaya, following his imprisonment in Turkey for using the word “Sayin” (“esteemed”) in reference to Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

12 years on, the European Court of Human Rights has finally issued its judgment (Case of Kaya v Turkey [2020] ECHR 468, Application no. 27110/08) declaring Kaya’s right to freedom of expression, as protected under Article 10 of the Convention, had been violated and has awarded damages accordingly.
