"Fake Sheikh" convicted at Old Bailey
Maz Mahmood aka the "Fake Sheikh" has been convicted by an Old Bailey jury of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice during the course of the Tulisa Contostavalos trial which collapsed in 2014. Jeremy Dein QC represented Tulisa at her trial, securing the collapse of the charges against her. Archbold Review later published an article by Jeremy Dein QC & Laura Collier entitled 'Non-state agent entrapment - the X Factor' examining the legal issues. Mr Dein and Arlette Piercy acted in several cases over the last 15 years where Mr Mahmood’s integrity and working practices have been fundamentally called into question.
Mr Dein & Ms Piercy secured the acquittal of Abdurahman Kanyare in the 'red mercury' case which involved a "sting" by Mahmood, working then for the News of the World. During the course of the Kanyare trial, Mahmood was cross-examined extensively by Jeremy Dein QC. During the course of his career as an investigative journalist, Mahmood was the main prosecution witness in cases which have led to the conviction of dozens of others who have always alleged he acted in a serially corrupt manner. It is now hoped a number will seek to have their convictions reviewed. Mr Dein's profound knowledge of Mr Mahmood's history, the cases he has been involved in and his legal knowledge and experience have proved a formidable armoury in successfully defending those accused as a result of Mr Mahmood's journalistic endeavours. Ms Piercy also has expert knowledge on these matters.
