Sophie Nandy

Sophie is a criminal defence specialist with a busy crown court practice. She has experience defending in cases involving all types of allegations including fraud, sexual offences, serious violence, drugs and public order offences.

Sophie is a committed advocate, with a dedicated approach to client care and a meticulous approach to case preparation.

She has a particular interest in cases involving sexual offences across the spectrum. A recent case in which she was led involved historic sexual offences where the defendant had an intermediary.

Sophie also appears in the Youth Court for cases involving serious offences. In addition, she has experience in the civil jurisdiction of the criminal courts.

Sophie acts in a range of matters as a led junior and junior alone.

Background

Before joining the bar, Sophie worked as a paralegal at a London criminal defence firm, assisting on a wide range of cases. Sophie contributed to the publication of “Human Rights in Criminal Law”, specifically regarding the relationship between Article 7 ECHR, UK criminal trials, and sentencing.

Sophie worked as a research assistant to Counsel on multiple immigration appeal cases, that had a background of criminal proceedings. Whilst at University Sophie was Project Director of a Pro Bono Unit. This project supported the Syrian Legal Development Programme.

R v A (2024) – Led junior, representing the first of eight defendants in a large-scale alleged conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs. A was acquitted of conspiracy to supply cocaine and heroin, and found guilty by majority of the conspiracy to supply cannabis. Led by Sebastian Gardiner.
R v W (2024) – Led junior in trial of historic familial rapes. W had an intermediary. W was acquitted of all counts. Led by Chiara Maddocks.
R v C (2024) – Led junior in fraudulent trading trial. Led by Matthew Radstone.
R v D (2023) – D was charged with stalking involving serious alarm or distress over a period of 2 years. Acquitted of this offence as well as alternatives after trial.
R v S (2023) – Suspended sentence for S, who had pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis.
R v F (2023) – F was sentenced for dangerous driving and other driving offences, which placed him in breach of a community order. F had been pursued by police before crashing into a residential front garden at speed. He received a suspended sentence.
R v I (2023) – I was charged with harassment. A section 78 application was successfully made to exclude reference to an earlier NMO. I was acquitted.
R v T (2023) – Suspended sentence for section 20 offence involving fracture to eye socket.
R v C (2023) – C was due to be sentenced for a non-dwelling burglary and related offences. He was already serving a 16 month sentence for other offences. Persuaded the court to pass a concurrent sentence of 6 months on the basis of totality.
R v S (2023) – Following legal argument regarding prosecution failure to disclose underlying disclosure in an assault trial, the prosecution offered no evidence.
